Top Signs You Need New Windows (And Why Waiting Can Cost You More in the Long Run)

Having problems keeping your house warm in the winter or cool in the summer? Noticing drafts or fog trapped between the glass? These are some of the most obvious signs you need new windows. Learn some of the other warning signs to watch for, plus the hidden costs of delaying window replacements.

1. Drafty Windows

A drafty window is one of the first signs that homeowners notice. If you feel like you're always cold in the winter or hot in the summer, it could be an indication that air is getting through your window where it shouldn't.

There are a couple of ways to test if your window is letting in a draft. Hold your hand up to the frame. If your window is working properly, you shouldn't feel any airflow. If you can feel cool or warm airflow even when the window is shut or locked, you've got a draft. A more visual way to test this is by holding a lit candle or a strip of tissue paper near the edge of the frame on a windy day. If the flame flickers or the tissue moves, air is definitely getting through.

Drafty windows usually come down to one of a few causes: the rubber seals around the glass have hardened or shrunk with age, or the frame itself has warped, breaking the seal.

If you're in a pinch, adding some weatherstripping or caulk can buy you some time. But re-caulking every year or two could be a sign you need new windows installed.

2. Visible Damage

Aside from drafty windows, visible damage is the clearest sign it’s time for new windows. Don’t just look at the glass. Take a walk around your house and look at the glass and frames. Cracks, warping, rot, or small visible gaps between the frame and glass suggest damage, too, and may indicate your windows have moved past maintenance and into replacement territory.

3. Condensation or Fog Between the Panes

A little condensation on the inside of the glass on a cold morning is normal. That's humidity in your home mixing with the cold glass. When the fog or moisture is trapped between the two panes of glass, that's a clear warning sign that outside air and moisture are leaking in. Once that seal is gone, the insulating gap stops doing its job, and no amount of cleaning will get rid of the fog since it's inside the glass unit itself.

4. Trouble Opening, Closing, or Locking

You shouldn’t have to wrestle with the window every time you want some air. A window that doesn’t open and close right, or that doesn’t fully catch when you try to lock it, could point to premature aging from weather or other factors outside of your control.

Wooden frames shrink and shrink with humidity. Vinyl frames warp in direct sunlight. Balance systems can wear out. These problems are more than an annoyance; they’re a security gap that should be taken seriously.

5. Higher Energy Bills

Windows are one of the biggest sources of air loss in your home. Look at your energy bills over the last few months and years, if you can. Have they been trending up? Incremental cost increases could be another sign you need new windows, especially if nothing else in your house has changed.

Think it might be time to more forward with new windows? Our guide to choosing the right windows for your home can walk you through the different window styles and material types, so you know what to ask for during that first consult with a local window contractor.

6. Outside Noise Feels Louder

A window in good condition with a tight seal actually helps insulate your house from outside noise. If traffic or neighbors start to sound closer than they used to, it could be a sign you need new windows.

7. You’re Still Using Single-Pane Glass

Single-pane glass was standard for decades, but it offers a fraction of the insulation that modern double- or triple-pane windows provide. If your home still has its original single-pane windows, that glass is working harder than it needs to keep outside temperatures where they belong.

Switching to double- or triple-pane glass is more energy-efficient. It can help keep you and your family comfortable and lower your utility bill.

8. Age

Age alone is one of the clearest signs you need new windows, even without any visible damage. Most windows last between 15 and 20 years. If you can, keep track of when your home’s windows are nearing the end of that lifespan. Knowing their age lets you plan and budget for a replacement on your own timeline, instead of scrambling after a window fails.

Silent Costs of Delaying a Window Replacement

When you start to notice the signs, especially the non-cosmetic signs, that you need new windows, it can be easy to put it off. But delaying the inevitable can cost you more than you might think, in some expected and unexpected ways.

High Utility Bills

Consumer Reports estimates that replacing windows can save up to 13%, or nearly $550 annually, on your home energy bills. That's hard-earned money just slipping out the window until the problems are addressed.

Mold Removal

Window framing with water damage is a breeding ground for mold. When it's left untreated, it can spread to other parts of your home. The more it spreads, the more expensive it will be to remove it, not to mention the dangerous health effects on your family.

Home Security Threats

Windows that don't lock can leave your home vulnerable. Statistics show that 23% of home burglars enter through a window. Installing new windows can reduce the risk of a break-in and help keep your family and belongings safe.
